As I write this, there are two kickstarter projects that is vying for your money. The first, Hexo+ has already been funded while a second, AirDog, is getting there. What surprises me is that they both do the same narcissistic thing, that is to film you while you perform your outdoor exercises which can then be posted to Facebook for all to see. Both have dedicated mobile apps that help in that process and for many, the video selfie is now a whole new possibility. Drone technology isn't new. The Israelis have been using it to spy on its neighbors since the 70s while the US have been using them to kill extended family members of the Taliban. These drones are cheap, probably 500 bucks and below but what they don't tell you is that you also need a damn good GoPro camera that could set you back up to half a grand. Another thing they omit to tell you is the flight time. So if you are into action sports, you only have 10 mins tops to flim yourself before the drone is drained of flying juice. There is also another downside that when you whip one out, a fat lady on the beach will accuse you of invading her privacy and whup your ass as you run for the hills, drone in tow, filming the event for the online world to see. There is no denying that drone photography is going to change the demand for cameras. Right now, there we are riding the cusp of that technology and once it comes down in price, you can be sure that everyone in the neighborhood will have one. |
